Protecting Your Knees

In my opinion, a forceful kick to a standing attacker’s knee is the best method to disable him. A precise, strong side kick or stomp using the heel or, alternatively, a straight kick using the ball of the foot against the front or side of an opponent’s knee, can cause significant damage that will drop him immediately. The knee is a hinge joint fastened together by four ligaments. A ligament is found on each side of the knee (the collateral ligaments) with two additional ligaments that cross, the ACL and PCL, deep inside the knee. Both ligaments attach on one side to the end of the thighbone (femur) and on the other to the top of the shinbone (tibia).54 During movement the ACL regulates how far forward the tibia can move with the femur. When the knee is attacked from the outside-in or inside-out, it is forced in an unnatural direction. Blunt force trauma from a kick can damage the PCL and ACL ligaments on both the outside and inside of the knee depending on the relative position of the kick. A targeted kick could collectively damage these ligaments, along with the patellar tendon. Damage may vary from a small crack in one of the small ligaments to a total rupture of the exterior or interior collateral ligament, or both. Other knee injuries caused by a deliberate kick could be hyperextension, hyperflexion, or rotational injuries with associated valgum/varum stress, while other knee structures are also often damaged.
